Key points

This guideline is recommended for radiological investigation of patients who present with suspected renal colic.

Ultrasound should be considered if patients are:

  • under 50 years of age (first presentation)
  • pregnant

Or when investigation is required in patients who re-present with renal colic.

Please note that this guidance is currently undergoing review by Safer Care Victoria to ensure  the content is up to date. In the meantime, we recommend that you also refer to more contemporaneous evidence where possible.

We recommend using the Government of Western Australia Diagnostic Imaging Pathways for loin pain (renal colic)
