Launched today, Victorian healthcare is embarking on its biggest improvement program to date.
100,000 Lives is a five-year, $58.34 million program to:
- prevent harm in hospitals
- avoid hospital admissions
- reduce unnecessary surgeries.
Led by the state’s healthcare safety and improvement specialist, Safer Care Victoria, the program unites more than a dozen targeted partnerships with health services – each delivering measurable results and positive stories of better, safer care.
100,000 Lives includes initiatives that will:
- halve the rate of postpartum haemorrhage, that is severe bleeding after childbirth that can be life threatening and psychologically traumatic
- reduce common readmissions to hospital after a heart attack by 20 per cent through improving out of hospital care, especially in regional Victoria
- prevent 13,000 children from being prescribed unnecessary antibiotics, ensuring they work when needed later in life.

Using an internationally proven method, the outcomes from each initiative will be carefully measured and tracked over 12 to 18 months, then shared across the sector for an even bigger impact.
While some initiatives are already underway, it’s hoped that every health service in Victoria will sign up for at least one of the initiatives. Opportunities for consumers and clinicians to join us as an expert adviser, and for health services to become partner sites, will be rolled out over the next six months.
