This report details Safer Care Victoria's review of two independent councils that review mortality and morbidity cases - the Victorian Surgical Consultative Council and the Victorian Consultative Council on Anaesthetic Mortality and Morbidity.
Our review found there is a clear need for ongoing case review that is objective, well-informed and timely. However, the current model lacks an efficient structure for a comprehensive perioperative approach to case and event review.
As a result, Safer Care Victoria is:
- creating a new Victorian Perioperative Consultative Council to start on 1 July 2019
- dissolving both the surgical and anaesthetic councils at the completion of their current term, on 30 June 2019.
There will be no gap in how perioperative mortality and morbidity is monitored and reviewed.
