Summary

Behaviours of concern (such as behavioural disturbance or aggressive behaviour) puts emergency department patients at risk of causing harm to themselves, other patients, relatives, visitors or staff.

There is growing concern in emergency care services about the management of these patient presentations. They are increasing in occurrence and pose significant safety risks.

This initiative will:

• develop guidance for managing acute behavioural disturbance and the use of restraint
• adapt and publish existing training resources on managing aggression, facility design
• develop a clinical pathway for patients presenting with behaviours of concern

Our clinical guidance on caring for people displaying acute behavioural disturbance in emergency settings aims to support you to provide person-centred, evidence-based care for some of our most vulnerable Victorians.
