COMPLETE - April 2020

Summary

Consumer directed care means recognising, responding and acting upon the consumer’s perspective.

We engaged consumers, carers and the mental health workforce to learn how the consumer’s perspective of key assessment and planning components could direct care in Victorian mental health services.

Outcome

Between May 2019 and April 2020, we undertook a scoping review of consumer directed care in Victorian mental health services. This included:

  • a review of literature, examination of existing data sets and direct engagement with consumers, carers, members of the mental health workforce and health services
  • 24 direct engagement opportunities, including meeting with 7 mental health services, 4 advisory groups and 5 Prevention and Recovery Care (PARC) services
  • an expert working group described consumer expectations when engaging with clinical mental health services as well as processes to ensure key assessment and planning components are consumer directed
  • development of a working aim, driver diagram and measurement strategy for a future quality improvement initiative.

From the scoping and engagement, we learned key assessment and planning components, and processes to ensure consumer directed care.

Target

Improved understanding of how key assessment and planning components are consumer directed in PARC services by April 2020.
